Mi aprendizaje en debate comenzó en febrero 2004 en un encuentro en Buenos Aires donde asistimos 12 alumnos y 3 profesores de diferentes partes de Argentina. Fue un encuentro de 3 días, era una preselección para el próximo evento en Junio del mismo año. El siguiente evento fueron tres semanas intensivas en capacitación de dos tipos de debate, legislativo y foro público, en los que también competimos. Este encuentro se hizo en Estados Unidos y asistimos 32 chicos y 8 profesores de China, Zimbabwe, Uzbekistán, Sudáfrica, Haití, Rusia, Moldova y Argentina. Hoy 21 de Agosto del 2004 se realizó el cierre de estas experiencias que consistió en un relato oral de lo vivido y de la redacción del informe final.

Lo que Sentí

La experiencia en Buenos Aires significó mucho para mí. Si bien era una competencia en ningún momento sentí que estaba compitiendo. Compartí muy buenos momentos con todos los participantes y me volví a casa con varios amigos nuevos. También me sentí muy conforme con todos los docentes involucrados en el encuentro. Al finalizare el encuentro no se anunció quienes habían accedido a la beca, lo cual me pareció muy bien ya que los vínculos creados no habían sido entre competentes sino entre compañeros, amigos.

Fue una sorpresa para mí enterarme que había sido seleccionada para IDEP (Programa de intercambio internacional de debate). En junio emprendí una de mis mejores experiencias, viajar a otro país pero conocer no una sola cultura nueva sino ocho. La duración de este programa fue de casi un mes lo que dio lugar a que surgieran muchos sentimientos. En ningún momento se sació mi curiosidad por las otras culturas, y aunque las diferencias entre culturas brotaban constantemente, comprendí mejor que nunca lo que es la globalización.

La experiencia consistió de una primera semana en Washington DC para la capacitación en los dos tipos de debate, una segunda semana en Salt Lake City compitiendo en estos dos formatos y una tercera semana de vuelta en Washington DC realizando la evaluación de la experiencia.

La primera semana de estudio fue intensa. Teníamos clases teóricas y clases Prácticas. Todos los docentes estuvieron durante todo el encuentro dispuestos a explicarnos todo cuantas veces quisiéramos. Durante esta semana llegamos a conocernos bien ente los chicos de los 8 países diferentes. El respeto que hubo entre todos como pares fue impresionante.

En el momento de la competencia sentí presión propia porque sabía que lo que saliera de mi boca iba a ser recibido por alguien que posiblemente no sabia nada de los argentinos y sus futuras conjeturas iban a estar estrictamente relacionadas con lo que yo dijera e hiciera. Sin embargo luego me di cuenta de que todos los chicos internacionales me conocían como era, como persona y si me equivocaba estaba bien porque estabamos todos aprendiendo.

Otra vez más me volví a casa con muchos amigos y con ganas de seguir aprendiendo y transmitiendo todo lo aprendido tanto en debate como humanísticamente. La experiencia me sirvió para entender con mayor claridad el pensamiento de alguien ajeno a mi vida cotidiana, entender el cómo y por qué de sus pensamientos y su decir. Hoy se me abrieron muchas posibilidades para elegir mi futuro que antes estaban allí pero que no las notaba.

Le estoy muy agradecida a toda la gente que compartió e hizo posible estas experiencias. Creo que la educación es la base de todo y si alguien tiene la oportunidad de participar en un programa parecido firmemente le aconsejo que la aproveche. Espero que el debate en sí se divulgue por la Argentina y que chicos de diferentes partes del país puedan participar e programas de debate.

Proyecciones

En mi ciudad, San Carlos de Bariloche, formo parte de un taller de debate en crecimiento. A mi regreso se comenzó a implementar lo que había aprendido en debate. Mi proyecto es hacer un encuentro con chicos de todas las secundarias de Bariloche para capacitar en debate y cuando esto este cumplido hacer encuentros de debate entre adolescentes. También estoy invitada a un encuentro en capacitación de debate en General Roca Espero que este tipo de capacitaciones se dé en diferentes partes del país para así poder hacer un encuentro nacional.

Learning How to Debate

My first contact with Debate was in February 2004, when we had a meeting in Buenos Aires. We were 12 students and 3 teachers from different Argentine cities. It was a 3-days meeting, and it was a selection for the next activity, in June 2004. It was a training of about 3 weeks, in which we leart 2 kinds of debate: Legislative Debate and Ted Turner Public Forum Debate. We also had a competitive opportunity. This meeting took place in the United States of America, and we were 32 students and 8 teachers from China, Zimbabwe, Uzbekistan, South Africa, Haiti, Russia, Moldova, and Argentina. Today, August 21 st, 2004, we came to Buenos Aires again, to close this program, with speeches about our experiences, our time in the US and finally writing these final reports.

Things I felt

The experience in Buenos Aires meant many things to me. It was a competition, but I have never felt I was competing. I lived so many nice moments with all the participants, and I turned back home with many new friends. In addition, I got on very well with all the teachers in the meeting.

Once the selection camp was over, nobody said who had won the place in the Program, which I was a good idea, because in that moment we did not have a competitive relationship, but a really friendly one.

Receiving the news that I was travelling actually surprised me. In June, one of the best experiences in my life started. Travelling to the US, to meet not only one culture but 8 indeed, was a great opportunity.

During that IDEP month I felt so many deep things. I could not stop learning and thinking about the other cultures. The differences between different cultures were brought up constantly, but never before had I understood so well what globalization means.

We have been to Washington DC the first week; then we went to Salt Lake City the second week; and finally we turned back to Washington DC, where we lived the last days. During the first week, we were trained in topics related with the formats of debate we were learning about. Then, in SLC we were part of the National Forensic League competition. Finally, once more in Washington DC, we could analyze the experience.

During the first week we had to study hardly. We had theoretical and practical lessons. All the teachers had no problems in case we needed more explanations, or if we needed them to repeat things. By the end of this week, we had had the opportunity of knowing a lot about the other students. The respect between all the students was really amazing.

In the moment of the competition I felt personal pressure because I knew that all the things I was about to say would be heard by people that maybe knew nothing about Argentina. Their next impressions about our country would be strictly related with the things I would say and do. However, then I realized that everybody there knew me, and they knew me in the way I was, really, as a person. If I did things wrong or if I made mistakes everything was good, because we were there to learn.

One more time I turned back home with a lot of new friends, and wishing to continue learning, and teaching all I have learnt, related and not related with debate.

This program let me understand more clearly the feelings and thoughts of people that are not part of my day-to-day life; I could also learn how and why they think what they think, and they do the things they do.

Now, I have more opportunities in order to choose my future; time ago I could not see them even if they were there. I really want to thank all the people that made this program possible, and all the people that were part of IDEP.

I think education is always the first step; if somebody can be a part of a program like this one, I strongly think he should participate.

Debate should be known in all the places in Argentina. People from all over the country should participate in this kind of debate programs.

Projects

In my city, San Carlos de Bariloche, I belong to a growing up debate group. From the moment I turned back form de US, we started putting into practice all the new things I learned there. I am planning a meeting with people from all the high schools in Bariloche, in order to train young people in debate skills. Once this done, we can arrange debate meetings between guys from different schools.

I am also invited to take part of a school debate training in General Roca. I hope these kind of activities are to be done in the whole country, so we can then be able to organize a national debate meeting.

Informe final

La experiencia del viaje a Buenos Aires fue muy buena, conocí muchas chicos y chicas que piensan y sienten cosas, al igual que yo, sobre la actualidad y todos tratando de expresarlo. Al principio, fue difícil porque era todo en ingles y sobre debate (que no muchos teníamos idea de lo que era). Pero nos divertimos mucho, tanto con nuestros pares como con los profesores y evaluadores.

El viaje a EEUU fue muy bueno ya que llegue a conocer muchas personas de distintos países y al mismo tiempo hacerme amiga de ellos. Lo cual fue un gran intercambio cultural entre países los fuimos(Uzbekistan, Moldavia, China, Rusia, Zimbabwe, Sudáfrica, Argentina y Haití. La primera semana, en Washington DC, fue destinada al aprendizaje de debate, donde aprendimos desde cero sobre argumentación, búsqueda de evidencia y sobre dos formatos de debate(Foro Publico y Debate Legislativo), fue muy difícil e intenso y mucho más en un idioma que no es el tuyo. En la segunda, fuimos a Salt Lake City, donde se realizó la competencia y todos los chicos internacionales debatimos entre nosotros y con chicos de EEUU. El cierre se realizo durante la tercer semana y evaluamos la experiencia de cada uno.

Hay que resaltar que fue muy interesante. Esta experiencia no se puede desaprovechar y lo mejor seria que otros chicos puedan tenerla como nosotros. Pero un consejo para los que lleguen a tener una oportunidad como la mia, no se cierren a lo distinto, sino al contrario abrirse y así poder disfrutar y aprender mucho más y también, preparense a un ritmo muy intenso y exigente. Este tipo de proyecto son muy productivos ya que el debate te ayuda a abrir tu cabeza, tu manera de pensar, y mirar las cosas de distintos puntos de vista y poder entenderlos, que es lo más importante.

En conclusión, lo que más me gusto fue el intercambio con los otros chicos y haber aprendido como defender mi opinión, pero no de una forma descontrolada y agresiva, sino que escuchando la opinión del otro y tratando de entenderla.

Final Review

The first trip to Buenos Aires was a very good experience, because i got to know a lot of boys and girls that think and feel the same as me about now a days problems, and that we are all trying to express them. At first, it was quite difficult, becuase it was all in english and about debate (something that not everybody knows around here). But we had a lot of fun all together.

The trip to USA was very nice because i met a lot of people from different countries and we became good friends. What made a huge cultural exchange with the other countries( Moldova, Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Haiti). The first week, in Washington DC, was destinated to learn about debate, i learnt about argumentation, the searching of evidence and about two different debate forms( Public Forum and Legislative Debate), it was intensive and difficult because it was in another language. The second week, we went to Salt Lake City, where we had to partipe in the debate competition, debating against the internationals and north america students. Back in USA's capital, we did the final review about each experience.

I want to point out that it was very interesting. This was an experience that we don't have to take disadvantage of and it would be great that other students like us could have it. Let me advice you, if you get an oppotunity like mine, to be open to the different and not to close up, and also be prepared to an intesive and demanding work. This kind of projects are very productive because debate opens your way of thinking and changes your ways of seeing things and understand them, which is very important.

In conclusion, what i most liked was the cultural exchange with the other students and having learnt how to defend my opinions, but not in an agresive and uncontroled way, if not listenig the other opinions and trying to understand them.

Final Report

The first step was to send an application form, and then to wait to see what happened. Later on, we knew that we have been called to participate in the pre-selection Camp in the city of Buenos Aires. It was already an achievement, not because of the effort which has been little, but because the experience (in case we traveled or not to the United States of America) was going to be great.

The pre-selection camp held in February was more than interesting. In one side, the fact of getting together 12 young students and 3 teachers of different parts of the country, to discuss topics which we did not know, to debate in ways new for our country. Hernán Bonomo and Nina Watkins were the ones who made the academic part just wonderful. Everything was on time, neat, organized, clear and useful. All the staff members were cool, a very human and respectful group.

Some time later the name of the ones who were travelling was announced. From now on, starting to organize everything, from the cloths to the passport, waiting to get to Ezeiza and fly to Washington DC to live a memorable month in our lifes.

During the first days before travelling, Hernán Bonomo came once again to Argentina to catch us up a little bit about what was waiting for us in the north. Not only he informed formal matters, bur he also told us a bit of how life is there. Difference between timetables, values, habits. This was as well an important moment.

On 4 th June we took the first plane. Much anxiety, wills to meet people, knowing other cultures, sharing moments and learning new techniques of debate. A 12-hour flight before landing in American land. We were very nicely received at the airport. Tara, Aaron, Shawn and Christie were part of the staff in this first stage.

We spent the first week in the campus of the CUA (Catholic University of America). The place was very comfortable and there was an immediate integration between all the participants. The lessons took almost all of our time and they were excellent. The teacher’s staff was of the best kind. We studied from the morning till the night, We learnt thousands of things in a short period of time. The days were very short and time flew.

The second week was very special, because we lived in family-houses. At the time we got to Salt Lake City we were received by Harold Keller, an unique person, a teacher who taught us things related with debate, but he also gave us pieces of advice, which had marked our personalities.

Living with American parents, sisters and brothers was one of the best things. We have learnt to love so many people who were with us during a week and who will be with us forever.

The competition gave us the chance to put into practice what we had learnt the week before, at the same time that we were getting in touch with so many students from different states of the country. It was the best moment to realize how much varies the way of looking at problems and the world realities from country to country.

We spent our last week in the States in Washington DC, once again in the CUA campus. But the timetables and activities were not that demanding. There were more opportunities then of integration, of exposure in front of diverse authorities, of touring, closures and good-byes.

The experience was unique, excellent, unforgettable. The best way to see how big the world seems to be, how big the world is, and why, deeply inside, we are all so similar.

At the first place I would like to inform that I have already put in practice all the things learnt thanks to IDEP. As a member of the International Association of Lions Clubs I have in charge many spaces of training, where thanks to the program I usually use new techniques.

In this way I organized a program with a Trial format in the city of Neuquen, within the restrains of a district capacitating day. Afterwards I could do, under the restrains of legislative format, a Congress in the district O-3 of Leo clubs.

At the same time we are organizing, with the directive staff of Instituto Nuevo Siglo (school where I do my secondary degree) groups of training about education through debate, which will conclude with a Intern Debate Tournament, at the same institution.

El primer paso fue enviar la inscripción, y luego esperar a ver qué había pasado. Más tarde, saber que habíamos sido convocados para participar en el Campo de Selección en la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires. Ya era todo un logro, no porque el esfuerzo hubiera sido mucho, sino porque la experiencia iba a ser (viajáramos o no a EE.UU.) buenísima.

El encuentro de febrero fue más que interesante. Por un lado, el hecho de reunirnos 12 jóvenes y 3 profesores de distintos puntos del país, para tratar temas que no conocíamos, para debatir de modos novedosos en nuestro país. Hernán Bonomo y Nina Watkins fueron los encargados de que lo académico fuera un lujo. Todo puntual, prolijo, organizado, claro y útil. Muy buena onda entre los asistentes, un grupo muy humano y respetuoso.

Tiempo después llegó el nombre de los que viajaríamos a EE.UU. A partir de ahí, comenzar a preparar todo, desde la ropa hasta el pasaporte, esperando llegar a Ezeiza y volar hasta Washington DC para vivir un mes imborrable en nuestras memorias.

Los primeros días de junio vino Hernán Bonomo nuevamente, a ponernos un poco al tanto de qué nos esperaba allá en el norte. No sólo nos informó cuestiones de lo formal, sino que también nos comentó un poco cómo era la vida en aquéllos lados. Horarios distintos, valores distintos, costumbres distintas. Este fue un momento importante también.

Ya el 4 de junio tomamos el primer vuelo. Mucha ansiedad, ganas de encontrar gente, conocer otras culturas, compartir momentos, aprender técnicas de debate. Unas 12 horas volando para aterrizar luego en tierra norteamericana. Nos recibieron muy bien en el Aeropuerto. Tara, Aaron, Shawn, y Christie, fueron anfitriones de primer nivel.

La primera semana la pasamos en el campus de la CUA (Catholic University of America – Universidad Católica de Estados Unidos). El lugar era comodísimo, y entre todos los participantes se dio una integración inmediata. Las clases ocupaban practicamente todo nuestro tiempo, y eran excelentes. El staff de profesores era de lo mejor. Estudiábamos desde la mañana hasta la noche, hemos aprendido miles de cosas en muy poco tiempo. Los días eran cortísimos, las horas pasaban demasiado rápido.

La semana segunda fue especial, ya que nos alojamos en casas de familia. Al llegar a Salt Lake City fuimos recibidos por Harold Keller, una persona única, un profesor que nos enseñó cuestiones relacionadas con el debate, pero también nos dio consejos de vida, que nos han marcado nuestra personalidad.

Vivir con padres, madres, y hermanos estadounidenses fue de lo mejor. Hemos aprendido a querer a muchísima gente que nos acompañó durante una semana, y nos acompañará por siempre.

La competencia nos permitió poner en práctica todo lo aprendido la semana anterior, al tiempo que entrábamos en contacto con muchísimos estudiantes de diferentes Estados del país. Era el momento ideal para darse cuenta de cómo varía de país en país la visión de los problemas y las realidades del mundo.

La última semana en EE.UU. la vivimos en Washington DC, nuevamente en el campus de la CUA. Los tiempos y las actividades ya no eran tan exigentes. Allí se dieron más oportunidades de integración, de exposición ante diversas autoridades, de turismo, de cierres, de despedidas.

La experiencia fue única, excelente, inolvidable. La mejor forma de ver qué tan grande parece el mundo, qué tan grande lo es, y por qué todos somos, en el fondo, tan parecidos. ¨

IDEP – International Debate Exchange Program

En primer lugar comento que ya he puesto en práctica lo aprendido gracias a IDEP. Como miembro de la Asociación Internacional de Clubes de Leones tengo a mi cargo varios espacios de capacitación, en los que frecuentemente utilizo técnicas incorporadas gracias al Programa.

Así organicé un taller con formato de Juicio en la ciudad de Neuquén, en el marco de una jornada Distrital de Capacitación. Luego pude concretar, bajo el formato de debate legislativo, un Congreso en el Distrito O-3 de Clubes Leo.

Al mismo tiempo estamos organizando, junto a directivos del Instituto Nuevo Siglo (colegio en el que realizo mis estudios secundarios), charlas de capacitación sobre educación a través del debate, que concluirán con un Torneo Interno de Debate, en la misma institución.

Fecha viaje a EEUU: 3 al 26 junio de 2004

La primera etapa se desarrolló en la Universidad Católica de América, en la capital estadounidense, allí se capacitaron en:

• Argumentación
• Refutación o Contra argumentación
• Retórica – Oratoria – Elocución
• Debate y Formatos de Debate
• Foro Público y Debate Parlamentario
• Argumentación en Debate
• Investigación y Evidencia
• Construcción de Casos
• Estrategias de Oposición
• Evaluación de Debates: Cómo juzgar y ser juzgado
• La retórica y el debate como artes: Orientación a la praxis. Ejercitación grupal e individual.

Durante la capacitación, los cuatro alumnos representantes de cada país, debían ser divididos en dos equipos de dos integrantes cada uno, a criterio de sus profesores.

Luego de la primer semana de capacitación intensiva, que comenzaba a las 8:00 AM y solía finalizar a las 9:00 PM, alumnos y profesores representantes de : Argentina, China, Haití, Moldova, Rusia, Uzbekistán, Zimbabwe y Sud África, viajaron a Salt Lake City, Utah, para competir en el Torneo Internacional de Debate.

Para llegar a cuartos de final en “Public Forum”, los equipos debían competir con 3 equipos de EEUU y 1 equipo representante de los otros 8 países visitantes. Luego de 4 rondas de debate y después de vencer a 3 de los 4 equipos con los cuales debatieron, el equipo formado por las alumnas Gabriela Ribotta (Colegio Balmoral de Banfield, Bs.As.) y Paula Pérez Ghiglia (Colegio Dante Alighieri de Bariloche, Río Negro), obtuvieron ese reconocimiento y recibieron un premio y las felicitaciones de sus pares y profesores.

Más tarde, todos los alumnos también compitieron en Debate Parlamentario (para este formato de debate, los jóvenes se familiarizaron con la terminología que se utiliza en la inmensa mayoría de los congresos o parlamentos del mundo occidental. Aprendieron qué es una moción de orden, una cuestión de privilegio y otros mecanismos de los debates asamblearios). Dicha competencia se desarrolló en 4 cámaras diferentes. Cada una de ellas contaba con 8 alumnos de EEUU (representantes de distintos estados) y 8 alumnos de los países visitantes (1 de cada país). En 2 de las 4 cámaras, las alumnas Gabriela Ribotta y Paula Pérez Ghiglia, obtuvieron el primer puesto. Recibieron también premios por dicho desempeño y fueron reconocidas públicamente frente a un gran auditorio (Mormon Tabernacle – Salt Lake City, Utah) que presenció la Final del Torneo Internacional de Debate. Los alumnos Juan Mamberti y Jessica Sarmiento también obtuvieron muy buenos resultados e informes en las evaluaciones de los jueces.

Tanto el desempeño como los premios recibidos por los alumnos representantes de nuestro país, nos llenan de orgullo ya que Argentina era el único país de los presentes, cuyos alumnos no habían tenido experiencia en Debates con Formato (Debate Público y Parlamentario). Además, hay que tener en cuenta que los alumnos debatieron en inglés con alumnos para los cuales ese idioma era su primera lengua.

Los temas sobre los cuales debatieron eran de una gran complejidad:

• La eliminación de armas de destrucción masiva.
• La creación de bancos de ADN.
• La lucha contra los crímenes cibernéticos.
• El derecho –o no- a disponer sobre el medio ambiente.

Ya de regreso y como representantes de Argentina, queda un gran desafío por delante: impulsar el debate a través de la “Red Nacional” y conformar los Clubes o Sociedades de Debate, perfeccionarse y capacitarse.
